Several iterations of the Fishing Cafe featuring Dr. Ishigaki have been making the rounds of social media. I thought it would be nice to post the full-length, 52-minute version here, for ease of locating. (A shorter 11-minute cut can also be found).
While it is a Japanese-language film, they were kind enough to subtitle it in English. Hope you enjoy the show!
About: Fishing Café is the show that introduces fishing techniques in Japan. In this episode, Hisao Ishigaki takes us on a journey to discover the secrets of the Japanese fly fishing style, Tenkara. With only a rod, the line, and a fly, Tenkara is one of the simplest ways of fishing and has gained much popularity over recent years. Despite this modern phenomenon, Tenkara has been around in Japan over 100 years. Dr. Ishigaki takes us to learn the history behind this simple yet deep technique of Japanese fly fishing.
In perhaps one of the first significant applications of the Facebook Live Broadcast feature amongst the tenkara community, Tenkara USA founder Daniel Galhardo will be hosting a live video stream from Boulder Creek (Colorado), on Wednesday, June 8th.
The stream will speak about tenkara, do some live demonstrations, as well as attempt to answer any viewer-submitted questions. Galhardo ballparked the video stream to last about an hour to an hour and a half.
The broadcast will begin at 10pm Mountain Time, which also happens to place it ideally during the lunch hour on the East Coast. To join, visit the Tenkara USA Facebook page.
The Tenkara Rod Co. has quietly launched a new rod, the Sierra. A 10 foot, 2.8 ounce rod, the Sierra is advertised as having a “soft flex” and fits into the popular niche of sub 12 foot tenkara rod models. It carries an MSRP of $179.
I’m certain there will be more to learn about this rod in upcoming weeks, however, for now, here is the description as posted on their website:
“The Sierra is our 10 ft. rod. It has an incredibly soft flex and amazing feel to it. We designed it with smaller water in mind. When casting is tight and you need something small and agile, this is the rod. The Sierra is one of our funnest rods because of how light and flexible it is. The rod comes with a 10.5 ft. line which really allows you to keep the rod tip high and your line off the water for precise presentations. And the action of this rod gives you so much feel throughout the entire rod. You have to see it for yourself to believe how much fun it is.”
The popular “fly of the month” subscription service has finally made its way over to tenkara. The folks at DRAGONtail are now offering a 6-month auto delivery service that allows anglers to replenish their boxes with flies on a regular basis. Perhaps the best part of the subscription is that you get to choose how many get shipped, anywhere from 12 to 36.
