Merry Christmas Eve… The Sunday Morning Riffles are back celebrating another week of fixed line fly fishing… So, in the spirit of the holidays, consider this an early present to enjoy with your egg nog, yule log, or whatever pulls your sleigh. Ho ho ho, we hope you enjoy!
The Native King of Southern Appalachia
Going to start this week’s fixed line content with a plug for a video that isn’t fixed line fishing at all. Instead this really fantastic piece from Appalachian Productions highlights the history of, and the efforts being taken to protect the native brook trout of the southeast. If you’re into a good conservation story (with a little fly fishing mixed in) it’s worth the watch…
Have we talked about Backcountry Skinz?
I don’t recall if we’ve mentioned Backcountry Skinz yet or not. If you’re an angler that wants something that offers a bit more insulation than wet wading, but hates putting on full waders, perhaps these neoprene pants could be something to consider? They come in both 1mm and 2mm neoprene versions and certainly would provide a greater range of motion than traditional waders. Thoughts…?

Nikko Tenkara on YouTube
A handful of new videos have been released on YouTube that feature our friends from Nikko City spreading their love of tenkara. The video embedded below highlights Takashi Sakauchi and his insightful thoughts on Nikko style tenkara. (Be sure to turn captions on and have them translate into the language of your choice!)…
Bamboo Gripped Oni Type 1 Re-stock
They go almost as fast as they come, but if you’re interested in getting your hands on a bamboo-gripped Oni Type 1, a few were made available for sale at the Oni Shop this week. These rods are considered the holy grail of tenkara rods by many, so if this is something you’ve been waiting for, don’t miss out…

Micro Fishing Tenkara
Masheer are a fish species native to the waterways of Asia. I’m not going to pretend that I know a lot about them, but it doesn’t much matter. They look like a blast to catch on tenkara tackle! In this video by YouTuber Theodhian, quite a few masheer are caught in a tumbling stream that one might mistake for trout water…
Perimeter Strike Detection
Fishing midges might not fall into stereotypical tenkara’s “size 12 sakasa kebari” wheelhouse, but using tiny flies definitely comes in handy in many different fish catching scenarios, especially in the winter. Unfortunately, fishing almost invisible flies does present challenges. Jason Klass helps us attack those challenges in this Tenkara Talk article…

Tenkara in the Iowa Driftless
Gary Mineart has been keeping busy this winter fishing the streams of the Iowa Driftless Area. He releases a new video just about weekly and dropped the video below this past Thursday. If you’re into buttery brown trout and fishing in spring creeks, it doesn’t get better than these vlogs. Check it out…
Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup

Tenkara USA Amago Rod Report & Review
Today we’re going to do a rod report and review of the Tenkara USA Amago tenkara rod. Why the Amago you might ask? That’s certainly not a new rod… Well,…
Do you have something you think is worth mentioning in the Sunday Morning Riffles?
Pop us a note at staff@tenkaraangler.com using the subject line RIFFLES to let us know.

I have been thinking about neoprene waders like the Skins. Very interesting idea. If I have one concern it is that I have ruined booties getting caught on sticks on the banks and in the brush. I am still curious about the idea. I know the same damage can happen with regular waders.. but I can patch them if I need to. Can Neoprene be similarly patched? I suppose. ?
Love these Sunday Riffles.
Good question. Not sure if neoprene can or not.
The Skinz don’t have booties, they just keep you warm like a wetsuit, so more wet wading that not.
Add a pair of Waterproof-ish socks? Maybe. I like the idea of them.
Mike, I have a pair of the Backcountry Skinz and love them. They are perfect for wet wading in the Blue Ridge mountains of VA. Keep all the stickers and poison ivy off you, don’t catch in the water and if you put a pair of shorts over them don’t look too bad. I find that they breathe really well
Cool, which weight neoprene do you have if you don’t mind me asking?
