An Ambitious Idea
A few years ago, we had some grand video-based plans for Tenkara Angler. Jason Sparks really wanted to dive into videography, and create on-stream content that was a bit different than what was present in the tenkara space.
His idea was to follow one of his tenkara angling friends on a day out on the water, have them mic’ed up, and just have them talk while they fished and he recorded. Tightly edited, the final product would be part instructional, possibly part entertainment (depending on their personality), but hopefully a bit of a different spin on the prevalent head or chest mounted GoPro videos. Over time, he’d follow multiple anglers and this would become a regular series.
Jason even went out and bought the top of the line Google Pixel Pro phone to capture high definition video, a handheld gimbal for video stability, and little bluetooth microphones to clip on the angler. He was really into the idea, and when we received the brand new Tenkara USA Satoki to demo, I played guinea pig for this first (and possibly last) video session. Although, rumor is there may have also been some footage shot of Jim Tignor and/or Rob Worthing that weekend as well.
Then Jason moved away. Far away. And well, our grand video making plans went with him. (He’s doing great by the way!)

Uncovering the Satoki Session
I recently purchased a new desktop computer, and was in the process of going through the hard drive of my old machine, deleting files that I no longer needed in anticipation of transferring the good stuff. That was when I found the almost 60 minutes of footage we shot that day.
I’m not going to lie, the fishing action wasn’t good. I caught two fish and bumped another while he was recording, so it’s not the most entertaining of videos. But, it’s a little bit of a time capsule that I’d figure I’d preserve and toss up on the Tenkara Angler YouTube. So feel free to watch it if you’d like, critique my fishing and ongoing play-by-play in the video’s comments, and I’ll certainly bookmark the three spots where we run into fish if you just want to skip ahead to those.
Your Thoughts?
Out of curiosity, is this something you’d actually like to see us try to do more of in the future? Videos that are part trip report, part technique or tutorial? In a MUCH more edited format of course. (This one was intentionally unedited other than splicing the files into one.) I’d imagine 10-20 minutes is probably a good sweet spot for a video edit of this type of material. Let us know in the comments below!
