Article by Dave Noll
As we enter winter some of us tie flies and some of us read. I don’t tie but luckily live in the Driftless where streams stay open year round and when it’s really cold I read. This year I have come across some older books written by Datus Proper and a new one on the Driftless by Bob Luck.

Datus Proper’s book “The Last Old Place” was recommended by William Robichaud to me because it described trout fishing in Portugal. I enjoyed it so much that I also ordered his other three books.
- “What The Trout Said” is about trout flies and why certain flies work in different situations.
- “Pheasants of the Mind” talks about guns, birds, dogs and eating your game.
- “Running Waters” is about the people, flies, water and fish that pull people into the sport.
All four books are very well written and worth your time. They can be found online from Abe Books.
Last but not least is a book written by Bob Luck, and published this year, called “Woolly Buggers Don’t Count“. It is a travelogue of the Driftless where Bob discusses his adventures and foibles. For those of you who fish this area it will be a run down memory lane and for others it will be a reason to visit. Bob is a good storyteller and the book is a very enjoyable read. You can order it from Pocket Water Press.
