Tenkara Trip Reports Trout & Char

Nikko Headwaters Report – Spring Comes Slowly

Nikko Headwaters Report - Spring Comes Slowly

A week into the season, the crowds that descended on Nikko’s streams for opening day have thinned out. Guide Takashi and a visiting angler from Australia made their way into the headwaters.

The fishing was difficult, with a single rainbow trout landed, and a reminder that early season in the mountains asks for patience. The headwaters sit at elevation where spring arrives slowly. Water temperatures are still cold enough to keep fish lethargic, holding tight and feeding cautiously.

This winter was notably light on snow across the region, and the consequences are already visible in the water levels. Takashi and Hiro are watching the situation carefully, with drought conditions a real possibility heading into summer. Low water means concentrated fish. But it also means stressed fish, reduced activity, and water temperatures that can climb to uncomfortable levels.

It’s a good reminder of how tightly tenkara fishing in Japan’s mountain streams is tied to the rhythms of weather and snowpack. A powder-heavy winter upstream translates directly to healthy flows and active fish in June and July. When that snowpack is thin, anglers and guides feel it all season long.

“Rain is something humans dislike, but it’s essential for fish.”

For now, the fishing will improve as temperatures climb through April and into May. Expect the best windows to open up as the water warms and hope, along with Takashi and Hiro, for a few good rainy days between now and summer.
