In this 15 minute video published to YouTube by Tenryu Co., Chairman Miyoshi Shiozawa 塩澤美芳 gives an overview of tenkara angling’s history in Japan (from the Matagi to today), as well as discusses rods, lines, and flies. He has some interesting observations about tenkara’s popularity overseas (in America). It is definitely worth the watch if you have the time.
By the way, I’d love to share some water with Shiozawa-san. His enthusiasm and energy seems boundless!

Great video! I think that’s the best answer I’ve ever heard about when tenkara started. Also, love the porno music in the background.
I loved it where he said; “Tenkara has no rules”. Have at it boys and girls.
