Sunday Morning Riffles – 1/7/2024

The first week of the new year is now in the books. Is 2024 treating you better than 2023? I hope so, and if it isn’t, well… we’ve got a new batch of Sunday Morning Riffles to hopefully bring a little cheer to your screen. We’ve got fly tying, event updates, some new products, and the usual offerings of videos and podcasts. An observant reader might even notice an unintentional Italian theme this week… Enjoy!

Kebari Tying with Andrea Malzanini

Fly tyer Andrea Malzanini posts some detailed and extremely well shot tutorials on YouTube. While he’s focused on what I’ll call “regular fly patterns” to date, over the past two weeks he’s shifted almost exclusively to different variations of kebari. Examples that include a nice mix of sakasa and futsu. If you’re in need of some inspiration around your vise, perhaps his videos can provide that spark…

Registration for the 2024 White Mountains Tenkara Campout is Open!

One of the anchor in-person tenkara events each year is June’s White Mountains Tenkara Campout in New Hampshire. We teased the event back in November, but as of this week Red Brook Tenkara has announced that registration is now open if you want to reserve your spot. I’d definitely recommend signing up early as this event sells out each year…

Piacere Tenkara Season 3, Episode 1 Now on YouTube

We first met Davide Muccino Zarlenga and his wonderful Italian television show Piacere Tenkara back in the pages of Tenkara Angler in 2017. He’s done a great job of producing informative and enjoyable episodes over the years that review fishing technique, fly tying, and a lot of good humor. The first episode of Season 3 is now up on YouTube and it’s superb! (Be sure to turn captions on and have them translate into the language of your choice!)…

Paul Vertrees on the Fish Untamed Podcast

Paul Vertrees of Tenkara Tracks and Royal Gorge Anglers fly shop made an appearance on the Fish Untamed podcast last week. He spent time discussing tenkara, guiding, and being comfortable in the backcountry. (He even gave a nice shout out to Tenkara Angler!) Paul is a great podcast guest, so make sure to give it a listen…

Kris Goes Through His Rod Collection

This past Saturday Kris Franqui of Tenkara on the Trail spent some time looking at his “best & favorite” American tenkara rods within his extensive rod collection. This piggybacked upon a similar look at his favorite Japanese tenkara rods from the prior week. If you like to geek out on tenkara rods, you might want to give these videos a peek…

The TenkaraTalk Shop Expands

The TenkaraTalk Etsy shop has recently expanded to offer a few unique items for those that really want to explore the Japanese side of tenkara. First, Jason is offering Zenmai, or Japanese fern dubbing found in many regional kebari patterns. Next, and possibly better, he has started stocking Yuzo Sebata’s furled lines in two different lengths. Yes, for all the love level lines get in the US, the furled Sebata lines are a treasure. I wouldn’t sleep on grabbing one of either if they’re of interest…

D.I.Y. Hook Remover

Practicing catch & release is a key part of many a tenkara angler’s skill set. While most concentrate on fish handling basics such as wetting their hands before touching fish and using rubber bagged nets, others additionally employ hook removing tools so they don’t have to handle the fish at all. While there are several such tools available for sale, “hachimero” takes us through a DIY solution using a paper clip and wine cork…

Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup

We decided the only way to start 2024 was to jump in with both feet… so this past week at Tenkara Angler we released three articles. Well, technically the first one was Episode 12 of the Level Line podcast. In the other two we looked at the wonderfully handcrafted nets of Giorgio Fattori as well as welcomed Amanda Hoffner as a new member to the Tenkara Angler editorial staff…
