Hey, happy Sunday! Typically, I try to keep the lineup for Sunday Morning Riffles a good mix between articles, videos, and perhaps a podcast. However this week, the articles were a bit hard to come by so we’re a bit video heavy. I suppose our tide of content sources will ebb and flow. So take this weekend’s ebb tide for what it is; and we hope you enjoy this weekend’s Riffles!
Nissin Presents Tenkara No Oni
It’s definitely not every week we get a long form content drop featuring Masami Sakakibara, “Tenkara no Oni”. This past week the official Uzaki Nissin x ARES YouTube channel dropped a beautifully produced, 40 minute look into Oni’s world of tenkara. While we’re crushed that there are no English subtitles, you can glean a ton from this video from the various visuals throughout its run time…
Speaking of Translation Help…
The new issue of the Japanese-language magazine Headwater is going to be released January 16th! (To let you in on a little secret, back issues of this magazine were a key inspiration for starting Tenkara Angler.) According to the publisher’s Instagram, “The 2024 issue…will feature ‘Let’s Catch the Fish You Can See.’ How can you catch the char that floats lazily and the landlocked salmon that rises and falls repeatedly? In addition to how-to tips from the perspective of lure, fly, and tenkara fishing, the magazine also features a few unusual tricks. Of course, there are also plenty of exciting stories of mountain stream fans going back to the headwaters. You can read about crossing a dam lake in an inflatable kayak, making bread, boiling a bath, and more…”

Lego Tenkara Line Furling Machine
While this video isn’t new, it’s new to me. I must have missed this one when it was released last year. If you’re into fishing furled tenkara lines AND have a nice Lego collection, well, this video is for you! There’s actually quite a bit of tenkara-themed content on the Go Fishing Often YouTube channel, so check it out…
Tenkara Featured in MidCurrent
MidCurrent is a great online newsletter that touches on almost everything in the fly fishing world. It’s really worth subscribing to their emails or following them on social media to get a sampling of the latest and greatest. It appears they did a feature on tenkara (through a Tenkara USA lens) back in December that started to hit some of my feeds last week. It may be old news to some, but still worth giving a read…

Great Smoky Mountains Backpacking
It might be due to geographical bias, but I really enjoyed watching this backpacking trip recap video from Brett Andrews on his TenkaraFishing YouTube channel. The group of anglers go on a bit of a backpacking trip that includes some beautiful water, fish, and scenery. While many of the waters of the Smokies were at dangerously high levels due to weather this past week, this video rewinds time to show the area’s beauty…
“Unusual Tenkara”
His words, not mine, although quite a bit of what’s going on in this video by Nakaji’s Fishing Diary / Creek Trout Fishing is not what we’d probably recognize as “tenkara”. Rather, he’s using the long rod and short fixed line combination to go “lantern fishing“. This combination allows for very precise placement of the fly (or bait) in a small stream environment which Nakaji uses to great success using a floating line…
Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup
Missed this week’s articles on Tenkara Angler… fear not! Amanda penned her first article as a contributing editor and wrote about native fish and the Native Fish Coalition. Tom followed up with a gear review of sorts on a pair of gloves that might not help you this winter, but could be a key piece of your summer fishing kit. And while it isn’t new, we also re-posted a seasonally-relevant winter nymphing article from Anthony up on our Facebook page…
My Passion for Native Fish
I like to tell myself that it really doesn’t matter if I catch a fish or not, but it really does. Here…
Bigfish UPF 50+ Reversible Palmless Sun Gloves
Although it’s the middle of the winter fishing season, it’s never too early to begin planning for the warmer weather ahead. With…
Limestone Stream Winter Fixed Line Nymphing
I started fly fishing around 1992 while attending Penn State. The local limestone spring creeks became my “home waters” and I try…

Hi,
The “Oni,” video was great, but, as you wrote, an English translation of his comments and the text included in the video, would be FABULOUS.
Cheers,

I use Google Lens through the Google Translate app to decipher the text on Japanese videos like Nissin’s recent Oni video. Just pause the video and hold your camera up to the screen. The translation isn’t perfect but it’s better than nothing.
