Sunday Morning Riffles – 1/21/2024

Happy Sunday! Man, it’s cold out there… pretty much everywhere from what I understand. Perhaps the Sunday Morning Riffles can get your fishing juices flowing today. So grab that hot coffee or cocoa, and take in our latest batch of new articles and videos. You won’t regret your decision… Oh, and as you do, just a reminder, if you see people doing cool stuff in the tenkara or fixed line space that aren’t getting the love you think they deserve, let us know about it – they could be featured in a future Sunday Morning Riffles!

Flicky Flies Best of 2023

We’ve featured Chris Kayler‘s Flicky Flies YouTube channel here before, so I’m sure many of you are familar with his beautifully shot and thoughtfully narrated videos. This week he released a “best of” video that focuses on what he feels were his top ten favorite tenkara catches of 2023. This is about as close as tenkara fish porn as it gets…

Tapered Lines vs. Level Lines

Much like any piece of fishing gear, personal preference rules the day when it comes to tenkara lines. Many popular “pundits” seem to prefer fluorocarbon level line as their tenkara line of choice, but an interesting dialogue took place on Reddit this week and advocates of hand-tied tapered mono lines voiced their preferences. It’s honestly surprising that more talk of tapered line “recipes” doesn’t take place in the tenkara community, they make some really good points…

Denver Fly Fishing Show Weekend

The epicenter of the fly fishing universe (at least in the United States) seems to be in Denver, Colorado this weekend where The Fly Fishing Show has made its most recent stop. While it’s tough to link to a single post that captures all that’s going on, many fixed line friends have done a great job (particularly Luong Tam from Tenkara Tanuki) posting some of the activities on Facebook & Instagram. Some examples of posts can be found here, here, here, and here… (By the way, looks like they’ve got their own thing going on over in Japan too!)

A New Net Walkthrough

We first featured the handcrafted tenkara tamos of Italian artisan Giorgio Fattori on a Sunday Morning Riffles a few weeks ago… Then we followed it up with a post… and now gear connoisseur extraordinaire Kris Franqui of Tenkara on the Trail has received and created a video walkthrough of his net. Amazing craftsmanship from Giorgio…

Fly Life Looks at Tenkara

Author Steve Hudson details an outing on Georgia’s Smith Creek with a somewhat unconventional approach to the application of his tenkara rod in this article / trip report published to Fly Life Magazine. His DRAGONtail FoxFIRE performed admirably, allowing Steve to have an extremely productive day on some delayed harvest water…

The Woodpecker’s Will – Ballad of the Brook Trout

If you watch a lot of fly fishing videos on YouTube, certain creators really stand out stylistically. Rolf Nylander’s artistic take on the intersection of the pastime, regular life, music, and a roster of interesting friends leads to shorts that are “must watch” upon release. His latest dropped this week. And while it’s not related to tenkara whatsoever, I think you should give it a look (and listen)… (P.S. – if you’ve never watched The Great Shaku Hunter, stop whatever you’re doing and get on that ASAP)

More High Praise for the Kura-san Line Spool

Much like Kris took us on a walkthrough of his new net, M. Keegan Uhl takes through his Kura-san line spools. Pretty much every angler that has laid hands on one of these spools has raved about not only how well crafted they are, but how intelligently they are laid out. Check out this video if you want to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe it’ll even get you heathens to stop wrapping your lines around your rod’s grip… 😉

Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup

Oh my, it was a busy week here at Tenkara Angler! On Monday we dropped a Tenkara USA Amago Rod Giveaway… and the response to date has been amazing! On Wednesday we re-published an article by Mark Kautz that chronicles a fictional day on the stream with a tenkara rod. Last and certainly not least, Tom Davis wrote an opinion post on Euro nymphing that certainly generated a lot of comments. If you missed any of them when published, check ’em out…
