After a few years of offering the addition of highly sensitive carbon fiber grips to Oni tenkara rod models, Jeff Lomino of Riverworks Rod Co. announced this week that the service will be suspended.

But fear not, if you’re interested in getting your Oni modified, you still have a short window (until February 15th, 2024) to get your order placed, and a few of us on the Tenkara Angler team use and fully endorse the service. Heck, we wouldn’t have recommended it when Jeff first made it public in 2022 if we didn’t think it was a worthwhile upgrade.
Matt Sment uses a carbon fiber gripped Oni Honryu 395 regularly as his primary rod and raves about the performance. Personally, I have a Oni Type III for smaller streams that I affectionately refer to as “Darth Oni”. The sensitivity that the carbon fiber grip provides over the factory foam is an extremely nice upgrade without sacrificing any of the rod’s original balance.

I should probably mention that in addition to servicing Oni rods, Riverworks can also re-grip Tenryu rods with matching red fiberglass and river peak Kiwami rods with a “zebra” black carbon & white fiberglass. Both fish and look great.

With only about two weeks left to convert the grip on your Oni, Tenryu, or river peak, don’t sleep on this opportunity if you want to make one of these amazing rods even better!
