Sunday Morning Riffles – 2/25/2024

No cute narrative today to start this post… I’ve got tenkara on the brain so we’re going to get right into the Sunday Morning Riffles. It’s quite the grab bag of awesomeness and no reason to delay. Enjoy!

The Utah Cutthroat Slam Completed??

Now this is a fun video from TNT Epic Adventures. In this installment, the guys go out to Northwest Utah to catch Yellowstone cutthroat trout. They actually catch several species and one of them possibly completes the Utah Cutthroat Slam. If nothing else, the awesome take at about 5 minutes in is what this is all about! Give it a watch…

Tie Lefty’s Loop Knot

I suspect when most tenkara anglers tie a kebari on the end of their line they use a knot that’s relatively simple, like the improved clinch knot. But if you venture more toward fixed line fly fishing and want to throw streamers or nymphs, you’ll want to tie a knot that allows your fly to move freely at the end of the line. The folks at Epic Fly Rods published a tutorial on a great knot for that purpose, Lefty’s Loop Knot…

Big Grayling on Tenkara!

Grayling are gorgeous fish. They have that distinctive fanned dorsal fin that make them the center of attention of any fishing photo. Want to see a HUGE grayling? Check out this video from Salar Fly Fishing out of Poland. I wish captions were available to translate because there is a lot of talking going on, but one thing is clear, the Zen Tenkara Zako is able to handle this beautiful specimen with ease…

The Story Behind the Satoki

It brings me great joy to see new activity over on Tenkara USA‘s blog again. It was always a must read as tenkara spread its wings here in the United States. Their latest post is a recollection by our friend T.J. on how the Tenkara USA Satoki came to be. It’s an interesting story, you should give it a read… (And after you do, check our our review on the rod as well!)

Talking Tenkara with A.J. Moore

In the latest installment of the “Talking Tenkara” series from Tenkara Genki, Jared talks and fishes with the Driftless version of the International Man of Mystery… A.J. Moore. Seriously, A.J.’s a cool guy to hang out with and has some thoughtful insights when it comes to tenkara and fixed line fly fishing so it was good he was able to be highlighted in this fashion…

Tenkara Tanuki on Fly Fishing Journeys Podcast

As Luong Tam and his Tenkara Tanuki product line travel across the country doing the fly fishing show circuit, he’s meeting up with many different people learning about tenkara, some for the very first time. Last week Luong was featured on the Fly Fishing Journeys Podcast and gave an overview of his journey into tenkara and the sport itself. Give a listen…

Index Finger & Rod Markers

Stumbled upon this video from Mirna Mora out of Australia. Looks like they’re producing and offering tenkara rods for anglers down under. The narrator also mentions that the painted rings serve a purpose on their rods, and are not just decorative accents. In any event, this line of hand made rods tenkara rods look like something that Tom Davis needs to get his hands on…

Tennessee Tenkara Clinic

Hellbender Outfitters of Elizabethton, Tennessee will be hosting a two hour tenkara fly fishing clinic on Friday, March 8th from 2-4 PM. The session is being led by our friend Arran Kerr and will include both a “classroom” instruction as well as time to practice your new skills on the nearby river. If you’re local or can make the trip over, be sure to stop by…

Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup

This was a BIG week for Tenkara Angler!

On Monday we published an article by Gary Mineart about rotational moment and D.I.Y. counterbalancing of his ESZ tenkara rod. It’s one of the most “scholarly” articles we may have ever published to Tenkara Angler. On Wednesday, we announced that the 2024 print issue of Tenkara Angler magazine was now available. It’s a wonderful collection of stories from across the tenkara community (and world). If you haven’t ordered one yet, what are you waiting for? And finally, on Friday NorCal Nick Feller provided an awesome trip report of his 2022 hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. The writing and photos are absolutely stellar!
