Sunday Morning Riffles – 3/24/2024

Sorry for taking last week off from posting a new batch of Riffles. I was away from home for the weekend doing some fishing, so I had other things on my mind. Hopefully you’ll excuse me this time considering the circumstances. 🙂

However, last week’s absence means all the more to look at this week! We’ve got a bunch of videos (they seem to be the most consistent form of new content to share), as well as some new gear, a fundraiser, an interview, and an Italian tenkara gathering. Not to mention the recap of last week’s three excellent articles from Tenkara Angler. I hope you enjoy!

A Double Personal Best?

If you watch the latest Tenkara Genki video you’ll definitely see double! First, Jared Willadsen and our own Matt Sment go fishing, where Matt catches his personal best Driftless brown trout. The next week Jared goes solo and (possibly) catches the same fish? You be the judge, but if you look close, it seems pretty clear what’s going on here…

Zimmerbuilt Arrowood Chest Pack

I must have been asleep at the wheel, but I totally missed that Zimmerbuilt is now offering chest packs. Like the other fishing packs that Chris Zimmer creates, the Arrowood looks incredibly well thought out, and is also compatible with Zimmerbuilt backpacks, should you not want to use the optional standalone harness. I love the flexibility…

Building a Bamboo Tenkara Rod

In this video from Jarod Beukelman, he travels to Japan and is able to build a traditional wazao bamboo tenkara rod with master craftsman Masayuki Yamano. It’s a great look at how such a rod is crafted, and a bit of a longer take on an article we published in the Spring 2018 issue of the print magazine…

Seiyu Tenkara GoFundMe

Tony Parmenter of the Seiyu Institute is raising funds for a fire service focused group tenkara fly-fishing and EMDR trauma therapy intensive taking place this summer in Vermont which he would like to be FREE to all participants. He’s being assisted by tenkara anglers Dan Pierce, Nate Camp, and David Rich on this training. All facilitators are current or former fire service, EMS, or military professionals. Consider donating to this excellent cause

Pocket Rod Shootout!!!

Well, not exactly… but in this excellent comparison video by Keegan Uhl, he walks through his three pocket rods – the Nissin Tenkara Mini 32, the DRAGONtail Talon Mini 310, and the Tanuki Pocket Ninja Streamborn 290. Which one does Keegan prefer? You’ll have to watch to find out…

Zen Tenkara Profiled by AFFTA

The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) recently published a “Member Spotlight” article on Zen Tenkara. The article is actually an extensive interview with Karin Miller that asks her about the company, misconceptions around tenkara, and where things are headed in the future…

Cherry Trout (Yamame) Fishing

This video was kind of a random grab from NaksiCat, who isn’t really a heavy poster of tenkara-specific videos. This is an interesting one with a really beautiful yamame featured within. There’s also different styles of fishing featured in this video, as well as what appears to be a hot dog on a stick. Give it a look…

Tenkara Day in Italy

Looks like some of our Italian buddies held a tenkara outing on a catch & release section of the Nera River yesterday (March 23rd). “Tenkaldo” Aldo Menghini posted some photos on Facebook of what appears to be a very fun gathering of fixed line friends…

A Propeller Fly?

Japanese angler hachimero released a video last week where he fishes using a propeller spinning lure with his tenkara rod. He’s quite successful bringing fish to hand with this fixed line method. It looks pretty fun if you ask me, just don’t call it “tenkara”. 😉 Somewhere Chris Stewart is definitely smiling…

Tenkara Angler Weekly Article Roundup

Three articles from Tenkara Angler this week…. On Monday, Mike took a look at a very popular tenkara kebari from Italy that Americans likely know little about. On Wednesday, Matt stretched his fishing muscles from their winter slumber and took to the Driftless for some fishing. And on Friday, Payton Skidmore contributed a trip report about bluelining for tiger trout! If you missed any, take a peek today…

Shoulder Season Stretch

Schedule and circumstance have kept me from fishing much lately, but last week I finally got out on Wisconsin water. It’s what…
