Organization Profile
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) is a grassroots, non‑partisan sportsmen’s conservation organization founded around a campfire in Oregon in 2004, now headquartered in Missoula, Montana. Committed to preserving North America’s outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing, BHA operates via volunteer-driven local chapters across 48 U.S. states and Canada, with nearly 40,000 members engaged in habitat protection and wilderness stewardship.
The organization’s purpose is anchored in public education, advocacy, and land stewardship, all guided by the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. BHA focuses on issues like protecting federal lands from privatization, promoting public water and land access, and opposing unethical hunting practices such as drone usage. As a widely recognized voice, BHA urges federal land retention and champions fair chase principles nationwide.
BHA unites around programming like Hunting for Sustainability, Armed Forces Initiative, and Stewardship, each tailored to empower members in public land and wildlife protection efforts. Their chapters organize hands-on work like trail restoration, invasive species removal, and signing in streams to boost angler awareness and stewardship ethic.

From Alaska to Alabama and Ontario to British Columbia, BHA’s chapters serve as boots-on-the-ground advocates and policy voices for public land, wildlife, and ethical western traditions. Leadership is supported by board members and advisors in fisheries, ecology, and outdoor writing, keeping the organization nimble, principled, and deeply connected to the land.
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is a powerful conservation nonprofit defending public lands, waters, and wildlife across North America. With a volunteer-driven chapter network, it promotes stewardship, access, and wildlife habitat protection through advocacy, education, and restorative action. Guided by ethical sporting traditions and science‑based policy, BHA’s vision ensures that landscapes and wildlife remain wild and accessible for generations.
