I am excited to get the greenlight to start writing this on-going column for Tenkara Angler. In the months to come we will explore the many facets, and ideas that add to our tenkara experiences and that make up what could be considered elements of a tenkara lifestyle.
Hello!
Over the years I’ve immersed myself in the practice of tenkara angling. Tenkara has provided me with therapy, inspiration, and become a guiding compass in my meditative reflection on life. It takes me into nature, bringing me closer to myself, acts as a muse for my woodworking, fly-tying, and tinkering pursuits. The journey has sparked my curiosity for Japanese culture and style, ultimately instilling in me a deep appreciation for simple living and creative resourcefulness. Tenkara is such a significant part of my identity and daily activities, I can rightfully call it my “lifestyle.” I have been wanting to write a column on this for a little over a year now and I hope that you enjoy the ongoing article to come.
So… What is the “tenkara lifestyle?”
The tenkara lifestyle manifests in many ways. It is not just about the mere fishing technique but also includes the way we look at, choose, and use our gear. It is about placing emphasis on simplicity, connection with nature, and a minimalist approach to angling. Some, like me, find meaning in the meditative aspects of this form of angling, while others appreciate the portability and ease of using tenkara as an enjoyable way to fish. While each of us perhaps have a personal way that we relate to tenkara in our lives, we all share the love of tenkara and that love has likely transformed our lives in some way. That is maybe at the heart of it all. How we live into the role of being a tenkara angler. The tenkara lifestyle is about all the things we do to keep tenkara alive and growing.
What topics will be covered?
You can anticipate a range of topics, from fly tying and organizing gear to exploring equipment options, learn DIY hacks, explore the pros and cons of minimalism, and look at ways to enhance our trips with experiences beyond “just going fishing.” We’ll also examine our impact on the angling world at large, sharing our passion for tenkara while also helping to dispel some of the misinformation. We will consider ways that we can build our local, national, and international communities. I also expect there will be some great interviews as well.
Your ideas are important too!
It would be wonderful to hear from you. I would welcome suggestions for future articles. This is a space to celebrate our passion and envision the future of tenkara!
I eagerly look forward to delivering this ongoing column, and I genuinely hope you not only enjoy reading it but also actively participate in discussing the topics we cover. Stay tuned for the next edition of Tenkara Lifestyles. Until then, “best wishes and beautiful fishes!”
