My Thoughts
I was able to try on the Tenkara USA Fly-Weight Jacket and I think it’s a pretty solid product. It’s a nice, lighter weight that makes it ideal for Spring and Autumn weather. It’s probably even breathable enough for Summer, except for the hottest, most humid of days. All of the finishing touches are well executed, from the taped seams, zippers, reflective logos, elasticized velcro sleeve cuffs, grippy pulls, and bungee cord adjustable hood. Plus, its ability to pack down into itself to stow away in a backpack or large sling pack when not in use is key, because who wants to wear a jacket unless totally necessary?
It actually reminds me quite a bit of my Outdoor Research Helium Jacket, except its a bit heavier material and has two pockets at the waist (for your hands or gear) and the aforementioned pit zips for ventilation. While these features do add some weight, they are excellent for anglers!
One little note, the jacket seems to run a bit small, so I’d consider sizing up one, or maybe even two sizes depending on how much room you want. I’m 6 foot, 220 lbs, and usually wear either a size XL from pretty much every other jacket supplier. Admittedly, I have a bit of a beer belly (more like a pasta repository) and I think I would have preferred a 2XL in this jacket to accomodate my waistline.
About this Review
Both Anthony & I were given a sample of the Fly-Weight rain jacket to test out. Each year in the late Spring we go to the Driftless Area of Wisconsin to fish for a week. The weather can be unpredictable, but without fail there’s at least a day or two of drenching rain… so we had intended to give this jacket the full test drive on this year’s trip. However, Mother Nature decided it was not going to rain a drop, not to mention be 90+ degrees each day, not the ideal conditions for testing out a jacket of any kind!
The Tenkara USA Fly-Weight Jacket certainly looks and feels just like my more expensive rain jackets from The North Face and Outdoor Research, so I have confidence in wearing it. But until I get to really try it out in a fishing situation in a real rainstorm, I’m not going to “fake” some sort of review about its performance. Fortunately, at this price, (particularly the introductory price), and based on the features, it’s not a jacket I would have concerns about taking a leap of faith on should you be in the market for some added protection from the elements.
