Tenkara Tanuki makes some interesting rods. The Pocket Ninja Streamborn 290, the latest release from the mind of Luong Tam is now available for pre-order. (With 3 different choices of paint, of course!)
The Pocket Ninja Streamborn is the next evolution in the Pocket Ninja family. Featuring a 290cm fully extended length (9.5 feet), the Streamborn finds itself between prior recent installments – 240cm Headwaters and 320cm Outbound Adventurer. It comes in your choice of cosmetics: “Dragon & Carp”, “Fish Skin”, or “Brown Trout”.

The Tenkara Tanuki website also notes that the rod is 33cm nested (12.75 inches), under 2 ounces, and features a “medium” action. In regard to that action, Luong Tam mentioned on his Facebook page:
“The rod action is a hair faster than the original Pocket Ninja 290 because the blanks are un-sanded. The decision was based on fishers’ want to have better fish control on the fast water of the West Coast.”

If you’re a Tanuki fan and find this pocket rod intriguing, at the time of writing it appears about 20 units of each “color” are available for pre-order on Tanuki’s website. The rods are listed at $195.95, with an estimated shipping date of October 1st, 2023.

Hi Michael,
I have been waiting for the preorder to be dropped.
1) Thank you for posting.
2) I’m glad I woke up early today to preorder this rod and accessories.
Cheers,

Good stuff! Be sure to let us know how you like it!
I adore Luong’s products, and I could certainly use a 290 rod to fill the gap between my Tanuki 275 and my Nissin Pro Spec 2WAY 320. But I don’t really need a pocket rod. I need to convince myself that the advantages of this beautiful rod are enough to outweigh just using my Mizuchi at its middle setting. If I were a collector the decision would be easy!
