Is fishing for panfish like bluegill really considered “tenkara?”
Probably not, but it’s heck of a lot of fun to do with a tenkara rod!
Couldn’t help but notice over the past few weeks that Bart Lombardo, author of the blog Panfish on the Fly, (and Tenkara Angler magazine contributor), has been making some very prominent podcast rounds.
First featured on the “Tenkara Cast” with Daniel Galhardo…
Then later featured on the “Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast” with Tom Rosenbauer…
So if you don’t live somewhere with trout, or heck, even if you do and just want to enjoy some panfish fun, give these two podcasts a listen. Bart is very well-spoken and clearly passionate about the subject. They’re both really, really good.
And if you’d like to learn some more from Bart, check out Panfish on the Fly, or the following posts from Tenkara Angler back-issues:

Wow. What a wonderful video put together by Daniel Galhardo and Tenkara USA. It’s a little bit longer than most (over 8 minutes) but well worth the time:
From the video’s description:
Mr. Yuzo Sebata is one of the most well-known tenkara anglers in Japan. He keeps his fly-fishing simple and enjoys backpacking in the mountains of Japan catching trout and foraging for mushrooms. When we went backpacking together, he brought along a very simple fly-tying kit, which he pulled out at our camp by the stream and proceeded to tie a fly. Watch to see how he ties flies without a vise and with very simple materials.
In perhaps one of the first significant applications of the Facebook Live Broadcast feature amongst the tenkara community, Tenkara USA founder Daniel Galhardo will be hosting a live video stream from Boulder Creek (Colorado), on Wednesday, June 8th.
The stream will speak about tenkara, do some live demonstrations, as well as attempt to answer any viewer-submitted questions. Galhardo ballparked the video stream to last about an hour to an hour and a half.
The broadcast will begin at 10pm Mountain Time, which also happens to place it ideally during the lunch hour on the East Coast. To join, visit the Tenkara USA Facebook page.
See you on the stream!
Appears there was a bit of podcast trading going on over the last week or so between Daniel Galhardo’s Tenkara Cast and Tom Rosenbauer’s Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast.
If you really want to geek out on tenkara this weekend, you can listen to Rosenbauer making a guest appearance on the Tenkara Cast…
…and/or Galhardo making a guest appearance on the Orvis Podcast…
An oldie but goodie from Tenkara USA shows us ways to fish with a tenkara rod in tight cover.
Some of the most beautiful fish live in “hard to get” places. Use some of these tips to go find these gems.
Tenkara USA recently published a new Tenkara Cast regarding some of the obstacles people face when taking up new sports.
For many tenkara is a “new sport,” so it’s interesting to listen to Daniel’s thoughts on the matter. Oh, and he might even admit to picking up a reel…
